Brooklyn Nets star guard Kyrie Irving remains the most prominent holdout among NBA players refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine. With the NBA season just days away, he has a new message for everyone.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Kyrie had just four words for anyone looking for an update on his status. “Be still and know….” he wrote, much to the confusion of everyone.
The line may be a reference to the Old Testament verse, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
But it could also imply that Kyrie intends to stand firm and not take the vaccine. It’s only a guess at this point.
New York City has a vaccine mandate that requires people to be vaccinated in order to attend large events indoors. As a result, Kyrie is not eligible to play Brooklyn home games until he gets the vaccine.
The NBA will not pay players who are unable to participate in games due to violating local vaccine mandates either. So Kyrie stands to lose millions if he misses multiple games by not getting vaccinated.
But at this point, it seems pretty clear that Kyrie Irving doesn’t mind missing games or losing money. It certainly didn’t appear to be an issue for him last year, when he skipped numerous games for flimsy reasons.
There doesn’t appear to be any pushback incoming from his Brooklyn Nets teammates either, let alone the NBPA.
Were Kyrie any less valuable than he is, this might be a problem for the Nets. But they would probably rather have him for at most half of their games if it means increasing their chances of winning.
Will Kyrie play any home games for the Nets this year?
